Peduculosis Pubis is a parasitic infestation commonly referred to as "crabs" or "the cooties". Pubic lice are well adapted for attachment to coarse body hairs and can move from one person or animal to another when they are in close proximity to each other. On humans crabs can be found in the pubic areas, but can also be found on the head and eyebrows. The adult crab louse lives for about 30-days, but can only live up to 24 hours without a host. They mate frequently and adheres eggs or "nits" to the base of hairs. The nits hatch after a week and will grow to adulthood in about 3 weeks.
Symptoms
When you have a crab infestation you will suffer persistent itching, irritation and annoyance in the infested area. Pustules may or may not form from the bites and you may develop a severe skin reaction as well. A definite sign of a pubic lice problem is the discovery of small white specks at the base of the hairs in the afflicted area.
Transmission
Crabs can only live off a host for 24 hours, that is why normaly they move from host to host durring prolonged contact. Sex, sleeping togeather, sharing clothing, etc.
Treatment
Non-prescription insecticides which can be used for human louse control include synergized pyrethrins, A-200 Pyrinate, R&S, XXX, Liban, Pronto, Rid, and YDP. If a non perscription insecticide does not work, try a prescription insecticide like Topocide. If any of these are used as directed it should be extremely effective in destroying both the nits and lice. You can remove the dead nits with a fine comb and lice on the eyelids or eyebrows can be removed with tweezers. Remember to always consult a physician before using any sort of medication, and note that the itching will persist for several days after the application of an effective treatment. You must wash all clothing or bedding used durring the infection, use hot water or dry-cleaning.
