Cervical Cap

Description

A cervical cap is a silicone device inserted in the vagina to rest over the cervix so it can stop sperm from entering the womb. To use one you must get a prescription and an initial fitting.

Effectiveness

If properly fitted your success rate will be in the 80-90% range with the success rate dropping into the 65-75% for women who have given birth. You will find it is most effective when it is inserted prior to arousal.

If you have a yeast infection or use oil based lubricants it will make the cervical cap less effective.

Usage

Insert the Cervical Cap prior to sexual activity and it can if needed be left in place for up to two days. Keep the cap in place for at least six hours after you have sex and spermicide should be added before each act of sex you engage in.

Cost

The price will vary and such kits usually have instructions. You should replace your cap once a year or if you see the material becomes cloudy or damaged.

Advantages

You only need to use the cervical cap when you plan to have sex.

It doesnt mess up your hormonal balance, which is important for women who have issues with the hormone based contraceptives.

A woman who is breastfeeding can still use the cap.

A great option for monogamous couples who prefer not to use Condoms.

Disadvantages

Insertion can be a problem since it needs to be placed deep into the vagina to fit over the cervix. We recomend you chose a backup contraceptive method while you are learning to use this device.

Incorrect sizing and vigorous sex can lead to the cap coming off during sex so use the cap as a contraceptive measure requires you to be capable of planning prior to sex.

DO Not use a cap durring menstruion, and if you do leave it inside it can cause vaginal discharge and odor. Some find it will irritate the cervix and the surrounding tissue and this can be made worse still by the use of spermicide. Some peopler have allergic reactions to the material it is made of and latex tends to "grab the skin" or feel like sand paper if left inside to long. Most important if that it will not protect against STD's/STI's.
