Diaphragm

Description

A diaphragm is a soft rubber dome placed inside the vagina, over the cervix. This will hold a spermicidal jelly or cream against the cervix, killing sperm as they try to reach the uterus.

There are three types of diaphragms currently available:

- Coil Spring Diaphragm

- Flat Spring Diaphragm

- Arching Spring Diaphragm

You should as your physician which of these options is best for you.

Effectiveness

A diaphragm is 95% effective when used properly with a spermicidal jelly or foam, but will not protect you from STI's / STD's.

Directions

Once your doctor measures the inside of your vagina he or she will help you identify the correct diaphragm and size. Your doctor should show you how to insert the diaphragm properly and if it is inserted properly, neither of you should notice its presence unless your partners penis is unusually long.

Before intercourse, coat the diaphragm with a spermicidal foam or jelly and then insert it.

Do not worry about any jelly or foam getting on other parts of your body, you can wipe it off (just don't ingest any). After your sexual activities are finished, leave the diaphragm inside of your vagina for six to eight hours.

Remember to add more spermiced every time you have sex during this 6 -8 hour period.

To clean the diaphragm, take it out of your body and wash it with mild soap and water, dried and then dust with cornstarch before you put it back in its container.

To check your diaphragm simple fill it with water to ensure it does not leak.

Drawbacks

A diaphragm will not stop an STI or STD from spreading between you and your sexual partner.

Do not use a diaphragm during menstruation it can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome.

If a diaphragm is not removed it may cause a foul smelling discharge from the vagina, low back pain, and general pelvic discomfort. If a diaphragm is too large, it will cause mild discomfort and may cause difficulty urinating. This problem is usually remedied by switching to a smaller diaphragm. Furthermore, the diaphragm can become displaced during sexual intercourse by the penis withdrawing and reinserting repeatedly.
