Morning After Pill

Description

The morning-after pill is a high-dose of estrogen and progestin in pill form, and is used in emergency situations such as rape or when a woman has had unprotected sex or the chosen contraception has failed. Do not take a morning after pill without first consulting a physician!

How it Works

The morning after pill interferes with the mobility of the egg and changes the uterine lining so that the egg cannot attach itself.

Effectiveness

The morning after pills can be as high as 89%  effective, and can last for up to 5 days. Naturally if you do still get pregnant it will probably cause issues, defects, and complications as you have spiked your hormone balance, and many doctors recommend a therapeutic abortion. Ask a doctor for details about this potential concern.

Directions

Your physician will tell you how to use the morning after pill, however most morning-after pills must be taken within 72 hours of your unprotected sexual encounter. Normally, you are given two pills to take immediately and two more to be taken 12 hours later. To prevent upset stomach and vomiting, you should eat ginger or drink ginger ale to naturally calm the stomach. Please consult with your physician about taking the morning-after pill. If you do not have your period in the next three weeks be sure to have a pregnancy test.

Drawbacks

These high dosages can mess up your menstrual cycle and cause side effects and most find the morning-after pill an unpleasant last ditch option. You will probably experience upset stomach, vomiting, and it can last up to 2 days. If the combination of hormones does not prevent pregnancy, they may harm the fetus, and you should consider the possibility of having to have an abortion should the method fail.
