Breast Health

This Is NOT a Complete List, there are so many breast disorders that we are only going to cover major categories.

Infections and Irritation

Breast infections and irritation are normally caused by hormonal changes and or other issues which can result in mastitis. Mastitis will cause pain, fever and abscesses which may require surgical intervention.

Tumors and Cancer

Fibrocystic Disease, are benign tumors or cysts in the breast, can be mistaken for the cancerous variety. Paget's disease of the breast, on the other hand, is a malignant tumor which means it will progressively get worse until it kills your. Paget's disease doesn't present symptoms that are obviously harmful and can go unnoticed until it is too late if you do not know your body and check for changes.

Early Detection

Early detection can be improved with regular self-exams, and if something is unusual don't be alarmed, simply report it to your doctor. You can also prevent issues by maintaining a healthy and physically active lifestyle combined with eating properly. Remember, not all breast disorders are malignant and early detection will greatly increase your treatment options. Practice makes perfect: if you do your own Self Exam once a month on the first Saturday of the month, you will get to know your breasts well and can be more conscious of gradual changes. The day above was just an example, you should try to pick a day when your breasts won't normally be swollen or sore due to your menstrual cycle.

Once you are done with your Self Exam you should perform a visual inspection of your breasts and take note of any rashes, nipple discharge and changes in shape and color of your breast and/or nipples. We would recommend you use a mirror for this as well as doing a self exam while standing, sitting, with the hand of the breast your are checking resting on your head, and lying down. If you don't know how to perform a proper self exam have your doctor show you how.

Once again if you find something unusual while doing a breast exam don’t panic. There are a lot of conditions that are benign and thus mild and non-progressive, but make it a point to get what you find checked out thoroughly.
