STD Testing

If you are become sexual involved with a new partner it is very important that you both get tested for STDs beforehand. Most STDs have little to no visible symptoms early on and others never show up at all! A STDs can be life-threatening so you should take proper testing very seriously. When ever you have sex with someone, you are both in effect having sex with every person EATHER of you have ever had sex with!

Its also a good idea to get a check up one a year to make sure you didn't catch anything from a sexual partner you assumed was clean. Either way, lets move on to...

Making the Appointment

Often you have to do paperwork with any clinic the first time you visit, so call them up and find out what they will need before hand. Once you have an appointment can now take steps to find out what, if anything, is wrong with you STD wise and then take care of it. Next your off to the clinic, here is what to expect ...

Once You Get to the Clinic

When you get to the doctor’s office remember to check in and fill out any required paperwork. They will probably ask for demographics like where you live, your age, birth date, and insurance information. Once they call your name you will be lead back to the examination room where they may ask more questions, take your weight, and probably give you a cup to fill with specimen in the bathroom. After you leave the bathroom and give them your "sample" you should be taken to a room where the examination is done. Further tests will be done like taking your blood pressure, your pulse, ask you a few questions like, and inquire what you want the doctor to look.

At this point you will probably be given a robe to put on and the nurse will leave the room. Now once again you wait for the doctor to show up. Most doctors will try to engage you in conversation so you they can ensure you are calm enough to begin your physical.

Often they will ask a lot of questions, like "when was the last time you were intimate with someone?" or "When did you last have an intimate relationship?" or "Have you ever have unprotected sex?"... As you can see very personal and often blunt and sexual in nature, so please don't take offence, simply answer to the best of your abilities so you doctor can assess you and figure out what's wrong.

What a Woman should Exspect

You'll have to lay back and get as comfortable as possible, put your legs in the stirrups and the doctor will ask you to relax as much as possible. The more relaxed you are the easier this whole process will be. The doctor will then insert the speculum to keep your vagina open, this may feel cold but bear with it your almost done. Now the doctor is going to do a pap smear and taking cultures from inside you for testing.

A pap smear is performed with a plastic instrument that is inserted inside the open vagina and gently scraped against the cervix to collect a sample or specimen. This sample will then be tested for any abnormal cells which could be cancerous or may lead to cancer if left untreated. The pap smear also can tell whether you have contracted human papillomavirus (HPV), a common treatable infection which many women acquire.

The doctor will then find out if you asked for a bacterial culture. From here if the answer was yes they will collect a sample from you to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Both are sexually transmitted diseases that usually show no symptoms and can lead to PID and leave you sterile if you don’t get it treated.

Once this is done the speculum is removed and the doctor will then put on a pair of gloves. Once your doctor applies lubricate onto a finger they will insert it into your vagina while pressing down on your abdomen. This will allow them to feel your internal organs to make sure there are no abnormalities. Once completed the finger comes out and you are done.

Once you get dressed you can go into birth control methods if you want anything prescribed and the doctor will give you a call in about two weeks with the results. You should also ask for one more thing... a blood test for HIV

Male Physical

First your doctor will proceed with an external examination to check for any bumps, rashes or anything out of the ordinary. The doctor will also check for warts and ask if you’ve had any pain while urinating or any discharge from you penis. Your doctor will also ask if you’ve felt sick or had any swollen glands anywhere. Your doctor will then check your pubic hair, the urethral opening, and check your anus. Then comes the uncomfortable part, your doctor will inserts a thin plastic stick into your penis. This stick collects live cells from inside your penis which are checked under microscope for any STD's.

Now your doctor will check for a hernias by holding your scrotum while asking you to cough. Once you are done with this last bit you can get dressed and get ready to leave, but before you go, make sure that you ask for a blood test to check for HIV. The doctor should call you in 2 weeks with the results of your tests and then you know if anything needs to be done.
